Camp NaNoWriMo Rebel

We are in the last gasp of summer and the final week at Camp NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) where the campers are writing 50,000 word novels in one month. In my cabin of 5 people and one dog named Waffles, I am a memorist hiding out among the novelists. This first time I have been writing my memoirs during Camp NaNoWriMO going against the grain. I am writing my memoir “Two Step” a story of a Native American woman finding herself, her higher power, and true love.  Behind closed doors it is strange to talk with the novelists. They describe elaborate fictional characters and daring plots to unravel the challenges they are in. While I describe to them the challenges of revealing intimate details of my life and how to oraganize it. But maybe it’s not too far off. I once read somewhere that your memoir must read right like a novel so perhaps my background in writing novel drafts may serve me well as a memoirist too.

As a Camp NaNoWriMo Rebel, I redefine Camp NaNoWriMo as a camp for writing where my goal is to reach 50,000 words by the end of August. I started off with a blast! To get into the spirit of Camp I went and watched a bunch of camp movies. I went through my old journals and got inspired with posts that included details that I had long forgotten. I used on trial period to try out Scrivener software that was very helpful to organizing the details of my story through easy to use index cards and and the binder. Several Camp NaNoWriMo campers highly recommended Scrivener to use for writing my memoir. For most part, Scrivener has been invaluable though it took me a while to learn how to use it. I went through all the tutorials and watched several videos on how to use the software effectively. When I had a problem compiling my document the tech support for Scrivener were awesome in providing a quick response to my request that helped correct my problem quite easily. I have one glitch that recently surfaced that I am going to need to write to them about though. All participants in Camp NaNoWriMo get 20% off of Scrivener and those that validate at 50,000 words can get 50% off of Scrivener.

I have been writing in NaNoWriMo in the original month of November since 2007 generating mulitple drafts of novels. Camp NaNoWriMo first appeared in 2011 and I participated in both June and July of that year. I also participated in June this year and in August. However, this is the first time I have ever written in any NaNoWriMos and gotten sick for a whole week. Yes, for Camp I was in bed with swollen tonsils. That puts a big damper on all the summer festivities. Right now I have managed to reach 40,004 words in my memoir. It’s the final week of Camp NaNoWriMo. The last chance to reach my goals. I just received my Camp NaNoWriMo t-shirt after a few weeks waiting and I am proudly going to wear it at work tomorrow. No matter if I reach the goal or not I will remember the fabulous experience I had with my cabin mates, and taking the time to invest in my creative dreams. Being in Camp NaNoWriMo has taught me the value of surrounding myself with writers and sharing writing challenges and accomplishments together. Already, I can say that my experience with Camp NaNoWriMo has been a success!

Warm regards,

Rainbow Blessings

Waukesha, WI on Sunday August 19, 2012

Greetings fellow travelers,

I went out to go on my Culinary Artist Date at a new local restaurant that just opened that week. While there, I was watching part of the movie RV with Robin Williams on the TV over head. My chicken sandwich was tasty with seasonings, greens, tomatoes, and mayo. I enjoyed the tangy taste of the potato salad. I sampled some cheese curds with rich creamy ranch dressing while sipping lemonade. I also had some ice cream covered with peaches. Overall, it was very satisfying meal at a good price. Rain had been down pouring just outside as I ate my meal. I knew that by the way the sun came shining that there was a good chance that there would be a rainbow. Sure enough as I stepped out of the restaurant I spotted the rainbow in the sky. I made sure to snap the picture. I am always emotionally moved by seeing a rainbow. I feel like I receive many blessings when I see a rainbow.

My Morning Pages I managed to write two out of seven days. Lately, I have been feeling extremely overwhelmed by all the projects and responsibilities I have. It makes it more challenging for me to do everything when I feel tired. I later found out I was sick with swollen tonsils. I had to spend time taking care of my health.

I managed to walk two walks of 20 minutes this past week. I made some changes to drink more water. I have been doing my best to keep tracking my food and water intake in my cell phone.

I reached 40,004 words in my Memoirs during Camp NaNoWriMo. Looking at the last two weeks of Camp NaNoWriMo. I ordered a Camp NaNoWriMo t-shirt on August 6, 2012 and I am still waiting to receive it. I wonder when I will receive it?

Warm regards,

Hope for Lily

This is baby Lily Kealaokamaluhialani Dahl who needs to have open heart surgery with her mother Lokelani Dahl.

Greetings fellow travelers,

A friend in my Artist’s Way Circle had begun posting links about her baby granddaughter Lily Kealaokamaluhialani Dahl who needs open heart surgery. Lily is Native Hawai’ian related to the Ha’o family.  Lily’s Hawai’ian name is…”Pathway-of-heavenly-peace. ” They’re fundraising goal is $10,000 towards the baby’s heart surgery.  Lily’s fundraising page is at

Each time I saw my friend reposting her links for her baby granddaughter, my heart ached because I knew she was not close enough to meeting her fundraising goal. I thought about it for some time. All I could offer was my Heart Mandala artwork and some experience creating the Hope for Lily group to share about how to come up with prayers and fundraising ideas.

I believe in the power of prayer towards any endeavor. So I took the time to write this prayer on the onset of the Hope for Lily group.

Dear Great Creator,
My name is Wabun Anung (Morning Star)
I come to you to ask for prayers for Lily.
Lily needs great healing in her heart.
Fundraising is needed.

We need people to come together here
to come up with new fundraising efforts.
We ask to know your will
and the power to carry that out.
Please walk with us.
To all my relations,
Wenona “Buffy” Gardner

Greetings fellow travelers,

On Wednesday August 8, 2012 I found out that I lost 12 pounds while on “The Writer’s Diet” by Julia Cameron. I was overjoyed to see that I have made some progress. That with the work that I have made I am seeing some results. While the Artist’s Way tools have been familiar to me for a long time, going on The Writing Diet as a whole have been new to me. Meeting with my face to face group The Sparkling Path Walkers each week I find a circle of women that share support that keeps me moving on this journey. In addition, I have the encouragement of The Artist’s Way Circle. With these two loving circles around me I feel that I am not alone on this journey. I look forward to walking this path of healing. Mon August 13 marks the beginning of week 6.

This past week I struggled with some outside challenges this week which impacted my writing. I was able to write two out of seven days in my Morning Pages. Despite the challenges I was able to reach 39,000 words in my memoirs during Camp NaNoWriMo.

Instead of going to a restaurant and taking a picture of a meal that I ate, I have been helping a friend who is in my Artist’s Way Circle to receive prayers and support for her baby granddaughter Lily Dahl who needs open heart surgery.  I helped create a group called Hope for Lily where people can come together to share kind words, prayers, and brainstorm ideas to help fundraise for the cost of the heart surgery. A Heart Mandala I made using markers the grandmother wanted to use as the artwork for the Hope for Lily group which I am truly honored. It’s basically provides food for thought. I will write an additional post today to go into more details on how to help Lily Dahl and her family.

I was able to walk two 10 minute walks. I am trying to make more choices to increase water intake. One time I reached for a bottle of water and I took a big drink when all of a sudden there were these bubbles tickling the inside of my mouth. I looked closer at the bottle and discovered I purchased was actually Sprite Zero. At least my intentions to drink more water were good.

An issue came up a couple times this past week of when I was both extremely hunger and tired at the same time. I wasn’t sure which to satisfy first. I imagined going to bed with a long submarine sandwich. At which a friend laughed and remembered when George from Seinfeld would eat a Reuben sandwich in bed when he made love. We both laughed.

Warm regards,

Greetings fellow travelers,

First week of Camp NaNoWriMo which is the challenge to write 50,000 words in a month. I am being a Camp NaNoWriMo rebel working on my memoirs. I reached 33,000 words. I have been going through my journal collecting details and poetry from and then organizing them in a writer’s software called Scrivener. I am happy to have the code to get 20% off Scrivener after I finish using the 30 day trial.

For my Culinary Artist Date I went to Golden Corral. I believe I made good choices like tacos and salad. Then I had a plate of fruit such as watermelon, strawberries, and oranges. There was a lot of people on Saturday night. I steered away from the fountain of chocolate and bowls of ice cream. I did have some small cotton candy because it reminds me of summer and I haven’t gone to any festivals to get any.

I wrote 6 out of 7 days of Morning pages. I realized how I have been recording my life in Morning Pages for a long time that I am going to read over them for my Memoirs I am writing during Camp NaNoWriMo.

I walked four days of 20 minute walking and I need to improve more on drinking more water instead of soda. Progress not perfection.

Warm regards,

Camp NaNoWriMo
