Finding Water Uncovering a Sense of Support

One major accomplishment was the success of the Wed. Halloween Dance I helped coordinate for work. Ever since I was hired 5 years ago as the Activities Coordinator I wanted to have a dance for where I work. There hadn’t been a dance for 8 years. I made it part of my goal for this year during last year’s review with my boss. The thing that really got the ball rolling was finding a DJ that gave us a rate that saved us $325 from his regular price. Even my boss thought that the price was really good and I appreciated her approval for the dance. I helped decorated for Halloween dance, I created posters and flyers, I arranged for the gift cards and the amounts for each place, I ran the pumpkin decorating contest, and I ran the judging for the costume contest for the best store bought and the best homemade costumes, I counted all the ballots and found out who all the winners are, handing out all the gift card prizes. There were so many people that became involved that really helped out making this dance special. I appreciate all my friends that made the dance awesome it wouldn’t have happened without them.

My health took a turn for the worst Friday as I called the on call doctor. The bleeding from the Complex Endemetrial Hyperplasia had reached it’s 8th week and on Friday large clots the size of half dollars had formed despite being prescribed medication for a week by my doctor that was supposed to stop the bleeding. The on call doctor had said my only options were to go to the ER or take a stronger dose of medication. I choose to take a larger dose of the medication and my loving boyfriend Bill went to pick up the new prescription for me.  The on call doctor insisted that I see the specialist on Monday.

Later,  I needed a day of healing surrounded by friends and family. I visited my alma mater Alverno College. I reflected on all the healing positive energy I experienced when I went to school there. Alverno was a very safe environment for me then and now. Bill who had never been there before and I shared a hot meal with him from the commons. I made a short video mentioning the fact that Alverno College was celebrating their 125th anniversary. Then my soul sister Judith, Bill, and I went to my other alma mater UW-Milwaukee for the Autumn Pow Wow. Because of my health I only did one dance which was the Two Step. My weight loss goal was to be able to dance the Two Step with my true love Bill. I was in regalia in a ribbon shirt of blue, purple, and pink flowers that was made by a Mohican friend named Kathryn Footit. My necklace of my Mohican tribe Many Trails was made by a Mohican cousin who was at the Pow Wow. The Two Step dance was a Freestyle Contest Competition which Bill and I have never danced before. All the Two Step dances I have ever seen or done were follower the leader. Bill and I danced around the drums and I asked Bill to spin me around a couple of times. I am shocked to have accomplished my goal before losing 200 lbs. It seemed everything lined up for me that night.

My Morning Pages reflect the struggles of my health and the frustration I felt of not having much time to make much progress with my memoir during NaNoWriMo. My Artist’s Date was to go shopping at the Pow Wow where I discovered the Mohican beaded medallion that I purchased from family members that I met for the first time. With walks I did amazing this past week considering my health as I received my FitBit pedometer on Friday. So far with FitBit I have taken TOTAL STEPS 8,344. TOTAL DISTANCE 3.70 miles. TOTAL CALORIES BURNED 21,147.

My Journey with The Artist’s Way

The Artist’s Way Circle


Greetings fellow travelers,

I’m Buffy and my Indian name is Wabun Anung which means Morning Star. I am Native American enrolled in the Stockbridge-Munsee band of Mohicans tribe. In 1996, I was sitting in Highwind books in Milwaukee. I was in a comfortable chair, sipping green tea, and listening to mesmerizing music when I noticed a book on a nearby table, The Artist’s Way book. I picked it up and as I thumbed through it I felt this was MY book. It spoke to me and I immediately bought it.

My life was more fun and playful as I did the Artist’s Way journey. It was doing little things like buying myself more strawberries, taking a mandala art class, and going to a theater show that gave me a sense of greater abundance in my day to day life.

But it also stimulated BIG changes too! I mustered up the courage to dare to live out my creative dreams…I went back to college at UW-Milwaukee to study drawing and painting post graduate. I began to play my Native American flute publicly in the park. I helped paint a mural and got my picture in the paper! These were so exciting to me!! So when I completed my Artist’s Way journey, I decided to do it again, but this time I joined an online cluster (that no longer exists) to do it with. I loved the interaction!! I dreamed that such a group could be brought to Milwaukee’s creative and artistic people!

In May 26, 2000 I created The Artist’s Way Circle Yahoo! and I have run the group for the last 12 years. As a group we expanded into The Artist’s Way Circle on Facebook. Between both groups there are over 700 subscribers.

Today I write as a Memorist and Poet. I am writing “Two Step” a creative memoir I am writing about a Native American woman finding herself, her higher power, and true love. I write Chick Lit stories in the forms of novel drafts “Step,” “Enigma,” and “Webcam Love.” I also have written a series of poems. My “Woman of the Dawn” poem was published in “First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples: Exploring Their Past, Present, and Future.” John Roberts. Emond Montgomery Publication. 2005

I joined this team because I am really impressed with the site SparkPeople and I am so passionate about the Artist’s Way. I completed 14 twelve week Artist’s Way journeys including a twelve week cycle of Walking in This World. I aspire to begin to start Julia Cameron’s third Artist’s Way book Finding Water this October.

Birthday Adventures

Greetings fellow travelers,

Well I made it back from Buffy’s Big Birthday adventure thrown by my boyfriend Bill. After a great birthday lunch at Outpost Natural Foods in Bay View, we stopped off at a friends’ spiritual store. Great people and great atmosphere and I already put the smudge spray they gifted to me on my Artist’s Altar. Then we went to Brookfield Square Mall for an Arby’s birthday dinner. Bill got me a little pink ninja for my altar to remember my special day together. We spent the entire day riding 7 buses and a cab ride today. Folks I am telling you I am one lucky woman to have such special boyfriend to shower so much love and attention on me. All day I had been enjoying reading all of your birthday messages to me I nearly used up all the battery of my cell phone! Thank you all for brightening my day and letting me know that I am held dearly in your hearts.

Week One of Writing Diet, I managed to write 5 days out of 7 days in my Morning Pages. Lately, I have been having dreams of feeling overwhelmed and negative about all the projects I am working on. I am able to write out about these feelings in my Morning Pages. Plus members in my Sparkling Path Finders group keep reminding me how I have various leadership roles and how I am an inspiration to them to keep going on their projects. I didn’t realize I made such an impact on people. That definitely shifted my perspective.

I walked everyday this week mostly 20 minutes each day with the exception of two days that I walked 60 minutes each. I noticed walking in the store recently that I have been able to get through the store easier which to me is a clear sign that daily walking is beginning to pay off for me.

I have been striving towards 8 cups of water daily. I have been successful at writing in my food journal everyday using the calendar app and memo app on my cell phone. It’s very convenient storing my food journal on my cellphone because it goes with me everywhere I go.

My Culinary Artist Date was at the Bay View Fork in the Road Café. Menu is at I enjoyed blue corn nachos, a char broiled cheese burger, and strawberry smoothie. I originally got a peach ginger smoothie but wow the ginger was soo powerful I couldn’t even drink it.

I talked with my nurse and therapist about doing The Writing Diet. I shared with them what I was doing including showing them my food journal and they both thought that I was on a very good path and to continue with The Writing Diet. I am grateful to have their blessings.
